October 31, 4.00pm – 7.00pm
The Light Party is a fun-filled alternative to traditional Halloween type activities that provides family fun in a safe environment suitable for all ages.
Many parents are not happy about their children trick or treating. Others do not approve of how Halloween celebrates darkness and fear with scary masks, costumes or activities. Some seek a Halloween alternative because of what they see is a negative influence at Halloween, one that encourages poor behaviour. A Community Light Party is designed to provide an alternative to these Halloween type activities. Our desire is to bring the local children and their families together to build a sense of community in the area.
In 2011 we first held the event on the Halswell Domain with local businesses providing the food and entertainment for around 2000 people.
In 2012 we built on this success by providing an event which brought local families together to build a sense of community in Halswell – especially considering the number of new families who have moved into the area post-earthquake.
Each Light Party includes live music, Elgregoe the Illusionist, performances by local schools and groups, face painting, bouncy castles, craft activities, the miniature trains and pony rides – all free to the local families and provided by local organisations and businesses with a sausage sizzle and other food options from local vendors.
Venue: Halswell Domain Picnic Area, off William Britten Avenue
