Ethical Christmas Market

Christmas is coming! This year we are doing something a little different – a local Christmas market with a global impact!

We would love to invite you along to an Ethical Christmas Market, Saturday 1 December from 4.00pm – 8.00pm at South West Baptist Church, 244 Lyttelton St.

Our local purchases make a difference to our global friends. Come and #buyfair this Christmas.

• Choose from a range of ethically sourced products, carefully curated by Bruce from The Addington Store
• Create a Christmas craft for free
• Bounce on a castle
• Relax at a coffee cart serving up Jailbreaker coffee
• Purchase some food truck fare
• Soak up some live, local music
• Sit and chat in our Living Room Cafe, over hot chips

And keep an eye out for elements of the Christmas Grotto!

We hope you feel welcome, festive & hope-filled this Christmas season.

Check out our Facebook event for more details.

Grotto Rest Year

The Christmas Grotto Experience has been running at our church for sixteen years, so for 2017 the Grotto team will be taking a sabbatical year to rest and re-assess. While this means there will be no Christmas Grotto Experience at South West Baptist Church, we are excited to be taking part in Christmas for the City – a Christmas party experience that caters for people of all ages, from all communities across our city – a celebration of the Christmas story. Christmas for the City is a gift to families and the people of Otautahi from the churches of Christchurch, held at Ara City Campus on December 16, from 4.00pm – 9.00pm. Find out more on the website here. See you there!

Advent Calendars – Rest Year

Over the past few years we have created a South West Baptist Advent Calendar, which has been gifted to our local schools and preschools, and sold all over the country. This year however we have decided to give the Calendars a rest year, and will instead be contributing to a new city-wide project called Christmas for the City.

If you have any questions about this, please feel free to get in touch.

Hospitality Update

Last year we had a thorough look at the future of the café. After talking with many people and groups, looking at the history, costs and successes of the past we decided to apply for and later received a resource consent and food handling registration from the City Council to run commercially. We don’t see it as a commercial space however, more a place of warmth, relaxed and comfortable hospitality that incorporates simple food and drinks.

Many of you have told us that you enjoy being able to chat to both newcomers and regulars over a cuppa after our Sunday gatherings. Our first step is to focus on Sunday hospitality, and creating a space where can welcome people and get to know each other better in a relaxed environment. We will always have free tea and coffee on Sundays, but to maintain this and continue to grow, we need the following:

–          Sunday Hospitality Coordinator

This will be someone who can provide barista coffee, order and set up food, and co-ordinate and lead volunteer teams on Sunday mornings. For more information on this paid role, please pick up an application pack from the Info Centre or Reception, or email Ellen Cooper ecooper@swbc.org.nz. Applications have now been extended until March 31.

–          Volunteers

We’re looking for volunteers to help with set up, clean-up, making coffee and serving with a smile! To sign up, visit the Info Centre or email reception@swbc.org.nz

We will then look at midweek options, stay tuned!
