SWBC Newsletter June 10 &17

Please continue to pray for the resettlement of our refugee families.

June 10 & 17

Kia Ora Whanau
This Sunday (June 10) we begin profiling the refugee families that we are sponsoring, explaining more about how we will contribute with our prayers, skills, funding, friendship and time. We have started having phone calls with the family members and receiving emails from them. It makes it very real and both exciting and challenging. Our prayer is that we can care for these families and help them integrate well into Christchurch life, communities, schools and work; and that we can document how we have done this in order to help other community groups who might take refugee families in future years. One way some may be able to help us with is buying a house – we are pretty close to being able to purchase a house but need some more funding.  Check soon for an update to my blog. The series we are doing on ‘Prayer Changes Us’ is clearly speaking to many people. Thank you for all your feedback and stories. We sense there is more God wants to show us and raise within us. In response we are extending this series and will be offering more mid-week events around themes from the series and encouraging new prayer groups to form.

Over the last year we have developed ‘The Living Room’ as a space of hospitality and conversation. A space we can live in comfortably and be ourselves. We started opening on Sunday mornings, then added Sunday nights and are now trialing Thursday mornings. If we can make sales equal costs and build teams of people willing to help make the space a great living room, then we will look to make Thursday opening permanent and extend these hours during the week. If you are around on Thursday mornings and looking for a warm and hospitable place to be, stay for a coffee, a bowl of chips, a scone or a slice – you’re welcome!

Speaking of being welcome, Amnesty International has started an ‘I Welcome Pledge’ asking people who are willing to sign and say they would be keen to support community sponsored refugees. The pledge can be found on their website.
