August 6 & 13
We’ve begun a new series on Sabbath based on both the importance of Sabbath space to God and the busyness of our lives. In our busy seven days a week world, and in an active seven day a week church, like ours, the value and practice of Sabbath can too easily be lost. As Steve said, when he opened this new series, the Sabbath time was the first thing in the Bible that God called ‘holy’, is modelled by God on the seventh day of creation, is mandated by the ten commandments, is the key shaper of Jewish community life till the life of Jesus and then is the most talked about command by Jesus. Yet how often do we get time to rest, recreate, retreat and renew?
Thank you to everyone involved in Alpha. The new course is going well with more new people coming. I talked to Duane about the beginning of the course and he said to say thank you to everyone involved and that it is “such a joy” to be part of.
In this newsletter there is a graph update on our giving. You’ll see that giving is down. We have managed to keep expenditure down too but the drop in giving is starting to limit what we will be able to undertake in the second half of the year. Our general church giving keeps the whole church, community, life groups, ministries and gatherings afloat.
Would you like to be part of renewing life on our port hills? See the re-genesis clip on our website – https://www.swbc.org.nz/community/events/re-genesis-planting-day/ and/or maybe you want to find out more about Christmas for the city – https://www.christmasforthecity.org.nz. 20 churches across the city are signed up to help bring this huge Christmas event to our city.

Papua New Guinea
Please pray for Papua New Guinea. They are in the process of completing what has been a particularly complicated election process and a new government should be in place soon. In the past, elections have been accompanied by violence and destruction of property. Please pray that a government will be formed peacefully and with the broad support of the country. Pray they would govern well. Pray that God’s people would be able to be peacemakers during this time.Phil and Chris Carr are working with local partners Adau and Domai translating the Scriptures into the Bamu language of PNG. The team in PNG are having trouble with their equipment (computers, sound recorders). As they work on the last chapters of John and some of the New Testament letters, pray that they would be able to complete the work without disruptions.Phil and Chris are in New Zealand at the moment. Their house is on the market and when it sells they will transition back to PNG. Pray that this process would go smoothly.
